Ukraine war update: Nuclear facility has lost external power and is operating on generators, according to UN watchdog.

 

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power facility in Ukraine has been deprived of off-site electricity for over a week and is currently dependent on emergency diesel generators, as reported by the UN's nuclear regulatory body.

 

The facility, which requires power to maintain the cooling of its six non-operational reactors, has only a 10-day supply of diesel fuel available on-site, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) stated on Saturday.

 

"The availability of diesel fuel is critically important whenever a nuclear power plant loses off-site power," remarked agency director general Rafael Grossi.

 

"This situation underscores the necessity of reliable external power and secure supply routes for ensuring nuclear safety and security." The IAEA also noted that the plant received diesel supplies from another off-site location on Thursday and Friday.

 

The loss of regular power supply at Zaporizhzhia occurred "following military activity on the northern side of the Dnipro River," according to the statement.

 

The IAEA is reportedly attempting to negotiate a local ceasefire to facilitate repairs to the electrical lines. Located in southern Ukraine, the plant was captured by the Russian military in March 2022, and its six reactors have remained shut down since that time.

 

Germanyis said to be preparing to hold Russia accountable for a purported drone attack at Leipzig airport and to impose sanctions on Russian entities.

 

The government led by Friedrich Merz is anticipated to announce these "extensive" measures within the next week, as reported by Politico, potentially in conjunction with a new EU sanctions package.
