Donald Trump says US ‘will not be attacking Iran’ before midterm elections

Donald Trump has said Washington will not strike Iran ahead of the US midterm elections, as the Islamic republic steps up attacks on commercial ships trying to transit the Strait of Hormuz.

The US electorate is deeply unpopular with Trump's war on Iran because it has caused a global energy crisis and an inflation shock that is making it harder for American voters to afford everyday goods and services.

Republicans are fighting to maintain control of Congress, which is increasingly appearing to be slipping from their grasp.

This fight is tied to the policies of the president.

Trump wrote on social media on Thursday, "We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd," adding that Washington and Tehran were "having productive discussions.

" After tankers were hit by missiles in the Gulf and off the coast of Oman late on Wednesday, indicating that a revival of shipping through the vital waterway is tapering off, oil prices surged on Thursday to their highest level this month.

After Trump's post, Brent lost ground and was trading at $103.62 a barrel, up 3.4%. The United States had retaliated against Iranian attacks on tankers attempting to transport oil out of the Gulf earlier in the conflict.
