A Flydubai passenger flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after a serious incident involving the pilots inside the cockpit.
Flight FZ1073 was operating a Boeing 737 on its scheduled route from Dubai International Airport to Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.
According to flight-tracking data and officials cited by Reuters, the aircraft transmitted a general emergency signal while flying toward Israel. It later transmitted another signal associated with possible unlawful interference.
The emergency signals triggered a major security response.
Israeli officials said the aircraft had experienced a physical altercation between the two pilots. Other reports said one pilot may have been injured with a knife during the confrontation. However, details about exactly what happened inside the cockpit remain under investigation, and some early reports have differed over which pilot was responsible.
Flight-tracking data also showed a sudden and rapid loss of altitude before the emergency signals were transmitted.
The aircraft then changed course and headed toward northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Israeli military aircraft were reportedly scrambled as authorities initially feared a possible hijacking. But an Israeli Prime Minister's Office spokesperson later told Reuters that the incident was not believed to have been a conventional hijacking.
The Flydubai aircraft eventually landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.
All passengers were reported safe and accounted for.
Passengers later described hearing shouting and experiencing a sudden descent that caused fear inside the cabin.
The incident also prompted an emergency security consultation in Israel. Israeli authorities said the situation was under control and that efforts were being made to safely return the passengers to Israel.
Flydubai confirmed that Flight FZ1073 experienced an incident while traveling to Tel Aviv and diverted to Tabuk, where it landed safely. The airline said it was working closely with the relevant authorities and would provide further information as it became available.
There are also reports that Israeli officials are investigating whether the incident could have involved a deliberate attempt to seize control of the aircraft or cause serious harm.
That possibility has not been established as a final finding, and the investigation is ongoing.
For now, the confirmed outcome is that the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia and the passengers survived the frightening mid-air emergency.
Authorities in Saudi Arabia, Israel and the airline are continuing to investigate what happened inside the cockpit and why the emergency signals were transmitted.
This is a developing story, and further details may change as investigators establish exactly what occurred.
