US President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Schulz discussed the possibility of imposing anti-Russian sanctions due to the situation around Ukraine at the concluded talks in Washington.
They announced this at a joint press conference, TASS reports.
Schulz noted that sanctions in the event of destabilization in the Ukrainian region would be very tough and universal.
“If there is military aggression, then it will be followed by a tough joint response. At the same time, it is important to use all diplomatic opportunities,” the German Chancellor said, adding that negotiations with Russia are “a very good sign.”
Biden, in turn, noted that the meeting discussed close cooperation between the United States and Germany and the upcoming package of sanctions, which demonstrates strong intentions. According to him, the main topic of the talks was "containment of the Russian threat."
Earlier, the American leader at a meeting with Schulz in Washington said that Germany is one of the closest allies of the United States.
The head of the White House noted that the parties are acting in relation to Russia in full agreement with each other.
He also added that the US and Germany are jointly working on China's challenges.
Prior to this, the German Chancellor called the purpose of his visit to the United States to send a message to Russia about the consequences of violating the sovereignty of Ukraine.
He added that all European allies are unanimous in this.
