Ukraine Awaits US Approval for Patriot Missiles as Zelenskyy Warns of Delays

Ukraine Awaits US Approval for Patriot Missiles, Zelenskyy Says

KYIV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Monday that Ukraine has been waiting nearly a month for US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to approve critical missile supplies for its Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Zelenskyy said he had instructed his team to raise the issue with Washington again, as Ukraine faces intensifying Russian attacks on energy facilities and civilian infrastructure ahead of winter.

The delay concerns missiles intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air defenses. According to Zelenskyy, the United States supplies weapons purchased by NATO allies through the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List, or PURL, a program that allows partner countries to finance military equipment for Ukraine.

Patriot air defense systems are particularly important because they can intercept certain ballistic missiles that pose a serious threat to Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure. NASAMS systems provide another layer of protection against aerial threats.

The reported delay comes as Kyiv continues to seek additional interceptors amid concerns about dwindling supplies and the growing demands of defending against Russian missile and drone attacks.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio acknowledged last week that a shipment of interceptors might not have arrived as expected. However, he said the delay was not politically motivated, according to Reuters.

The issue is adding to wider tensions between Washington and Kyiv over military assistance, intelligence-sharing arrangements and the use of satellite communications in Ukraine’s defense operations.

Ukraine has also reported disruptions to some US-provided intelligence warnings about incoming Russian ballistic missile attacks. Zelenskyy said on October 25 that those warnings had been fully restored. He also reported improvements in the performance of the military satellite communications service Starshield.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has pressed Ukraine to stop attacking Russian oil refineries and other energy infrastructure. Kyiv has argued that any halt to its strikes should be considered alongside Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities and the need for stronger air defenses.

The latest missile approval dispute highlights the importance of continued coordination between Ukraine and its Western partners as the war continues.

As of October 26, the US government had not publicly confirmed all the details of Zelenskyy’s latest account of the pending approval. The reported delay should therefore be attributed to the Ukrainian president rather than presented as an independently established finding about Washington’s motives.

World News 09 will continue to follow developments in US military assistance to Ukraine and their implications for regional security.
