China Seeks Stronger Security Ties With Tajikistan Amid Regional Instability

Wary of Regional Instability, China Calls for Deeper Security Cooperation With Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, October 19, 2026 —

China Seeks Stronger Security Ties With Tajikistan Amid Regional Instability

China has called for stronger security and intelligence cooperation with Tajikistan, highlighting Beijing’s concerns about regional instability and the potential threat of cross-border violence.

Chinese Premier Li Qiang made the appeal during talks with Tajik President Emomali Rahmon, according to a report by Reuters citing China’s state news agency, Xinhua.

Li urged the two countries to strengthen law-enforcement cooperation and intelligence sharing. He also called for joint efforts to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism, which Beijing describes as the “three evil forces.”

China has long been concerned that instability in Central Asia could spill over into its western region of Xinjiang, which borders Tajikistan. Beijing considers regional security a major priority, particularly in areas close to its western frontier.

The security concerns come amid a difficult regional environment. Tajikistan shares a border with Afghanistan and has previously raised concerns about cross-border criminal activity, including drug smuggling and illegal mining.

Last year, five Chinese nationals were killed in attacks in Tajikistan that authorities said originated from neighbouring Afghanistan, Reuters reported.

China is also a major investor in Tajikistan, giving Beijing significant economic interests in the country alongside its security concerns.

The two countries have been expanding cooperation in several areas. During Li’s visit, discussions also covered economic development and emerging industries, including the digital economy and artificial intelligence.

Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, maintains close relations with Russia, which operates a military base in the country. Its geographical position makes it strategically important for regional security and relations among major powers.

China’s latest appeal underscores its efforts to strengthen partnerships with Central Asian countries as it seeks to protect its citizens, economic interests and border regions.
